Cabaret 2020: Dial “M” for Music

The Ames Choral Society, under the direction of Steve Hoifeldt, presents Cabaret 2020: “Dial M for Music!, on Friday, March 6 at 7:00 pm and Saturday, March 7 at 3:00 pm, at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 209 Colorado, Ames. (Note:  this is a new location Cabaret 2020 is a variety show/revue designed to chill and thrill the audience through songs of murder and mayhem occurring in a variety of eerie settings like a library, a jail, an alley and secret rooms.   

 

Members of the Ames Choral Society, individually, in small groups, and as a chorus, will appear as villains, detectives, femme fatales and victims to spellbind the audience with ghostly and ghastly songs from a variety of musicals including Chicago, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, The Addams Family and Little Shop of Horrors.  

 

Laurie Hoifeldt, Show Coordinator, in describing the Cabaret, says, “This year’s Cabaret delves into the dark side of music and mysteries through a selection of chill-inducing songs.    Familiar mystery characters appear with the usual suspects and victims! Beware of man-eating plants! Come if you dare.  

 

Tickets for the Cabaret are $12 in advance for adults, and may be purchased at Rieman Music, 327 Main St., in downtown Ames, and from Choral Society members. During the intermission the audience is invited to enjoy refreshments provided by the Chorus. 

 

 The remainder of the Choral Society season includes a Messiah Sing-along on Saturday, April 4, at 7 pm, and the Spring Concert, Missa Gaia: Earth Mass , on April 26 at 7:00 pm, both at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 209 Colorado Ave, Ames.   The Ames Choral Society Summer Chorus will start rehearsing in early May for its patriotic summer concert. New members will be welcome to join at that time. 

The Ames Choral Society, which is in its 55th season as a community choral ensemble, rehearses on Monday evenings at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church and is composed of 50 singers, who represent a wide range of ages and occupations. Whether the singers are in high school, college, or employed in the community, they are all drawn to the enjoyment of community singing and the challenge of perfecting quality choral music. 

 

The Ames Choral Society appreciates the funding it receives from the City of Ames Commission on the Arts (COTA), but it is also reliant on membership dues and donations from the community for its operating costs. It is a member of the Ames Council on the Arts (ACAC).  It has received grants from the Ames Golden K Kiwanis, the Ames Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Thrivent Lutheran to purchase songbooks used at community sing-alongs.
